Dear Friends and Neighbors,
We have reached the halfway mark of the 2016 session! With less than 30-days left to finish our legislative work, our focus has shifted from hearings in committees to House floor actions and voting on bills that were passed out of our committees. We have reached the policy and fiscal cutoffs and I will work hard to pass bills on the House floor that are most important to our district and state.
I have great news to share. My bill, House Bill 2399, was approved by the House of Representatives with a vote of 95-2. This is a great step in the right direction in reestablishing integrity in law enforcement. It is essential that the citizens of Washington state trust both the integrity and intentions of their law enforcement officers. This bill reestablishes integrity in law enforcement by eliminating a police department’s demand that an officer issue a specific volume of tickets per shift. The bill prevents an officer from being forced to provide a source of sustainable revenue on their employer’s behalf. This keeps the focus of our officers on community-oriented policing and will show they are out addressing the issues and needs in their communities rather than trying to fill a ticket quota. I thank everyone for your support on this bill. It now heads to the Senate for further consideration. I will keep you posted on the progress of this bill as it continues to move through the legislative process.
