Rep. Jeff Holy saw his second bill signed into law today.
House Bill 1836 would extend the ban of contraband like drugs and weapons from McNeil Island, which was recently converted from a jail to special commitment housing for sex offenders.
“The people who stay there have the potential and motivation to be just as dangerous as any offender in a jail,” said Holy, R-Cheney. “I’m pleased we passed this bill to ensure both those housed at McNeil and the corrections officers who work there are kept safe.”
Introducing contraband to McNeil Island under the new law will carry misdemeanor or felony penalties, depending on the type of banned substance or weapon, and the intent behind bringing it into the facility.
The legislation passed the House and Senate unanimously, and with the governor’s signature it will go into effect July 28.
